San Patong Saturday Market and Lamphun – day tour

The weekly Saturday market at Sanpatong is absolutely unique. It is the biggest market in North Thailand and you should not miss it if you are in Chiang Mai on a Saturday. We explore this market early in the morning before we get on our bicycles and start an entertaining and beautiful ride to Lamphun. Along the way we will visit the seldom visited ruins of Wiang Takaan visit the fantastic doll museum and factory. We cycle along Ping River and take small country roads to Lamphun, a small city with several fantastic temples and an interesting handicraft market. We lunch in a local restaurant before we transfer you back to the hotel.
Total cycling distance: about 35kms, flat and partly unpaved
Our guide will meet you at 07:00 am. at the hotel. He will bring the bicycles with him.
We will drive to Sanpatong which is about 20 kms south of Chiang Mai.
Every Saturday a huge market takes place here. This is the biggest market in North Thailand and you will see certain things here for sale you won’t see at any other market.
We take our time here to roam around this remarkable place. We will visit the buffalo market and taste a cup of herbal tea. Literally everything is for sale here.
After this we will drive a short distance to the place where we will start our bicycle ride. We cycle through typical Lanna countryside, rice fields and longan plantations.
We pedal to Wiang Takan, a seldom visited ruined city. We will visit some of the most interesting ruins. From Wiang Takan we cycle through lovely landscape. We will pass fantastic local temples where we will stop for a chat with a monk.
Next stop is the wonderful Dolls museum which exhibits hundreds of dolls in traditional dress from all over the world. There is a small factory behind the museum. We continue along the Ping River and take backroads leading us to Lamphun, a city that is several hundreds of years older than Chiang Mai. We visit three of the most beautiful temples, amongst others the famous Wat Haripunchai. We climb the old city wall, visit a great handicraft market and have lunch before we return to Chiang Mai. You will arrive at your hotel at approximately 14:00 pm.
