Cycling, rafting and elephants – 2 days
From: 315.00 $ (Price for minimum 2 persons)
This is a two day/one night adventure including cycling, bamboo rafting and a unique, small group elephant experience. We take you cycling through typical Lanna rural landscape to the beautiful Doll Museum and the remote ruins of Wiang Takaan. From the land to the water: you will make an exciting trip on a bamboo raft on the Wang River before you end the day with a refreshing swim.
The next day starts with a leisurely hike to a Karen village before you visit the Tong Bai Elephant Camp where you will learn everything about the Asian elephant. Meet the elephants, feed them and bathe them. The proceeds from this visit will go to the Tong Bai Elephant Foundation. The elephants will enjoy this visit as much as you. Tong Bai Elephant Foundation doesn’t allow elephant riding.
Cycling distance: about 25 kms, flat and partly unpaved.
Day 1: Tuesday / Friday
Meals: L D
Your guide and driver will meet you at the hotel at 0800. Drive to Ban Khanomtom to pick up our bicycles. We will drive to the start of our cycling adventure. We will cycle along the Ping River for a while until we turn right into the countryside. It’s typical Lanna landscape we pedal through: longan plantations, ricefields, beautiful temples and friendly villages. There is time to chat with villagers who are working in the fields or in the plantations.
Next stop is the wonderful Doll museum which exhibits hundreds of dolls in traditional dress from all over the world. This is an amazing place which gets very few visitors. From the Doll Museum we continue through lovely countryside.
We pedal to Wiang Takan, a seldom visited ruined city. We will visit some of the most interesting ruins. Here our bike ride ends. We continue by car to one of our favorite restaurants, set in an interesting house.
From here we will drive to Mae Wang.
You will make an entertaining trip by bamboo raft on the Wang River. This was the means of transportation centuries ago. After rafting we will visit the lovely Mae Sapok Waterfall for a refreshing swim before we check into the charming Mae Win Guesthouse.
Overnight at the Mae Win Guesthouse.
Day 2: Wednesday / Saturday
Meals: B L
After breakfast your guide will take you for a morning hike to a waterfall near a Karen village. At 1030 we will visit the Tong Bai Elephant Camp.
Here we will spend most of the day with the elephants of the Tong Bai Foundation. The maximum group size is 9 people, due to this you will have plenty of time with the elephants. During the morning Tong Bai employees will provide you with information about the foundation and about the situation of the Asian Elephant, a species which is on the red list of threatened species. After this they will introduce you to the elephants and you will get to know them up close. Following this introduction you will enjoy a lunch with Thai specialties.
After that you will walk with the elephants through the forest to the river where you will bathe together with them. After you and the elephants had their fun in the water you will bring the elephants back to their compound.
Then it will be around 1600 and it’s time to say goodbye to our friends of the Tong Bai Foundation. Drive back to Chiang Mai after an unforgettable trip.
